How do I let my dog know I'm in charge? ›

Always take the lead – go through all doors, corridors, gates, etc. in front of the dog. Teach dog to walk calmly on a leash by owner's side – no leading, pulling, or lunging. Leave and return without excitement – enter/exit in a low-key manner (no big deal)

Once he's chased after it and got it in his mouth you need to bring him back. Hold out his favourite smelly food or treat. Brittany dogs have a strong sense of smell so he'll soon catch on and come charging back. If he doesn't, throw the toy or decoy a bit closer next time.

His sweet disposition is good for children and he usually does not mind some roughhousing. Eager to please, Brittanys enjoy being taught basic obedience and they are quick learners. They are best suited to a home with an active owner who will take time to train and hunt with the dog.

Plus, alpha rolls are ineffective. They do not teach your dog that what he just did was wrong. Anger-driven attacks are random and emotional. Effective punishment is consistent, immediate, and measured (Think: video games and red light cameras).

Speak in a firm but calm tone, and use body language to show that you are the leader. Avoid shouting or physical aggression, which can teach fear and lead to further aggression.
